Homeless Meter

The idea with these meters is that you stick coins in them rather than giving it to the actual people begging for money. I’m all for and I think it’s a great idea. I always feel like an asshole when I tell a homeless guy asking for change that I can’t help him, then continue down 16th street mall with two bucks in quarters jingling in my pocket. There is a reason for my seeming lack of empathy. If I give to one person, I’ll feel obligated to give to everyone that asks for help and pretty soon I would be the one begging for money.

I can’t say that I’ve put any money in the meters though, so guess I’m an asshole no matter what.

Here’s another photo of one of the many Denver homeless meters in action.

Wow – I had no idea these even existed. I’ll have to look for them next time I’m downtown!
